Pre-oxidized fiber fabrics are used in flow battery electrodes after carbonization and graphitization, which has many advantages. The following is a detailed introduction:

Improved conductivity

The carbonization and graphitization process makes the carbon atoms of the fiber fabric more regular, forming a crystal structure similar to graphite, which greatly improves the conductivity of the material, thereby effectively reducing the internal resistance of the battery, reducing the polarization phenomenon of the electrode during the charging and discharging process, and improving the charging and discharging efficiency and energy conversion efficiency of the battery.

Increase specific surface area

During the carbonization and graphitization process, some substances inside the pre-oxidized fiber fabric volatilize to form a rich pore structure, which greatly increases the specific surface area of the material and provides more active sites for electrochemical reactions, which is beneficial to vanadium ions, etc. Adsorption and reaction of electroactive substances, thereby improving the electrochemical performance of the battery.

Enhanced chemical stability

After carbonization and graphitization, the chemical stability of the fiber fabric is enhanced, and it can remain stable in the acidic or alkaline electrolyte of the flow battery, and is not easily corroded by chemical reactions, thereby extending the service life of the electrode and reducing the maintenance cost of the battery.

Improved mechanical strength

The original mechanical strength of the pre-oxidized fiber fabric is relatively low, but after carbonization and graphitization, its internal structure is optimized and enhanced, and the mechanical strength is significantly improved. It can better withstand the stress generated during the battery charging and discharging process and the scouring of the electrolyte, maintain the integrity and stability of the electrode structure, and is conducive to improving the battery's cycle performance.
